Awards

The SGATX currently has four awards to recognize individuals who have performed above and beyond the call of duty.  The awards are: The Sam Houston, William B. Travis, James Bowie, and Juan Seguin Awards.  Active, retired, and honorably discharged members of the Texas State Guard are eligible for nomination for the Sam Houston Award.  Active, retired, and honorably discharged members of the Texas State Guard and civilians are eligible for nomination for the William B. Travis, James Bowie, and Juan Seguin Awards.  Awards can be worn by any recipient.  Active TXSG members may wear their award on their uniform in accordance with TXSG Uniform Policy.

The deed or deeds of the nominated individual, or organization must have been of such magnitude to reflect great credit on the Texas Military Department and the citizens of Texas.

 

The Awards

The Sam Houston Award certificate with medal is presented only to an active, retired, or honorably discharged member of the Texas State Guard.  The nominee may be for a living or deceased member and is cited for exceptional achievement furthering the aims and goals of the nation, state, community, and the State Guard Association of Texas.  The nominee must be considered a visionary whose distinguished service was conducted with the highest military standards of integrity, leadership, patriotism, and professionalism.

The Sam Houston Award of the SGATX is considered the most prestigious of all presentations.

The Sam Houston Award

The Travis and Bowie awards may be presented to any individual, living or deceased, or organization, military or civilian who have demonstrated outstanding service to the Texas Military Department with emphasis on the State Guard of Texas. The Sequin award is presented for an act of valor.

The William B. Travis Award certificate with ribbon is awarded by the State Guard Association of Texas for distinguished achievement furthering the aims and goals of the Texas Military Department or the Texas State Guard component of the State Guard Association of Texas. The nominee has demonstrated loyalty by demonstrating a commitment to the organization, to the leadership of the organization, and the organization's mission. This service was conducted with the highest military standard of leadership and integrity for the betterment of others.  The nominee is not required to be a current member State Guard Association of Texas or a current or former member of the Texas Military Department.

The William B. Travis Award

The James Bowie Award certificate with ribbon is awarded by the State Guard Association of Texas for meritorious achievement and service in furthering the aims of the State of Texas, the Texas Military Department, or the Texas State Guard.  The nominee will have demonstrated humanitarianism through the individual’s generosity of time and self and whose distinguished service was conducted with the highest military standard of leadership, organizational ability, and skills for the betterment of other.  The nominee is not required to be a current member State Guard Association of Texas or a current or former member of the Texas Military Department.

The James Bowie Award

The Juan Seguin Award certificate with ribbon is presented by the State Guard Association of Texas for distinguished achievement demonstrated for an act of valor which  resulted in action of life saving or the prevention of death or injury and should demonstrate the individual awardee acted due to the skills and training enhanced through the individual’s participation in the Texas Military Department.  The award could be presented to a person who assisted in a lifesaving or injury prevention act.  The nominee is not required to be a current member State Guard Association of Texas or a current or former member of the Texas Military Department.

The Juan Sequin Award

Instructions for Nomination

Nominations will not be returned, and all nominations become the property of SGATX and may be carried over to the next nominating cycle or may be destroyed.

The nominations require the following:

Nomination - A well written narrative is critical and is the most important aspect of the nomination.  A typed narrative summary of the nominee’s achievements and contributions.  However, that should not exceed a single page of type written narrative.  Supporting documents may be included but will not be returned by SGATX.  A photo of the nominee is acceptable, but not required.

The nomination narrative may be used later in the actual awards presentation therefore accuracy is mandatory. The nomination form must include: A cover letter and typed narrative not to exceed one page.
